Sarlat is the capital of Black Perigord and THE typical medieval city of the region. It has to be visited ! Art and History town, you will discover it through its typical little streets, alone or with one of its numerous guided tours proposed by the Touristic Office.
The walk always begins with the visit of the Saint Sacerdos Cathedral, the ancient abbey of the Benedictine monks. It’s all around it that Sarlat emerged and became a prosperous town, even since medieval period. During Renaissance, Gothic dwellings made way for private mansions as the most famous is “La Maison de la Boëtie” that belonged to “Etienne de la Boëtie”, humanists, renown parliamentarian in Bordeaux and good friend of Michel de Montaigne.
“Sarlat vue du ciel”
From April to December, you can discover “Sarlat vue du ciel” thanks to panoramic lift nested in the old “Sainte-Marie” church, transformed in 2008 in covered market (by the architect “Jean Nouvel”). In the church bell tower, the lift benefits from glazed walls that offer a 360° view of the town, cobbled streets, ocher stones walls and lauzes roofs.
“Le Manoir de Gisson”
On the “Place des oies”, in a preserved sector of the old town, take time to visit “Le Manoir de Gisson” and you will discover the 17th Century Sarlat bourgeoisie way of life. This remarkable edifice of the medieval city unveils behind its walls the sphere of one to the most powerful family of Sarlat : the Gisson family. All the 15 rooms were restored with care and have been decorated for your viewing pleasure ; magnificent staterooms, period furnitures, fireplaces, woodworks and precious wood parquets.
Sarlat market, authentic institution !
Sarlat is heritage but also gastronomy ! 2 times a week, on Wednesday and Saturday morning, the town makes way to its market ! You will find there local products that you can prepare at La Barde, in the kitchen we put at your disposal in the evening, this thanks to the wise advices of the town merchants, always delighted to help you and have discussion about their products and craft.
All the year activities !
Many events filled the town with life during all the year ; truffle, nuts and goose celebration, Ringueta, but also films festival. In summer, its the festival of Theater games, Sarlat institution, that takes place in the end of July and begin of August, ant that presents classic and contemporary works. It’s also time of activities and street performances ! Spontaneous shows in all the town, they take place before sunset, for old and young people great pleasure !
