La Roque-Gageac

Distance from La Barde: 10 minutes

La Roque Gageac, between cliff and Dordogne

La Roque Gageac is much more than a site ranked as “Most Beautiful Villages of Fance”. It’s an atypical treasure, with a lot of charm, nested between cliff and Dordogne river. Exposed in full South sunlight, it benefits from an almost Mediterranean microclimate. It’s in a surprising way you will discover there an exotic garden with palm trees, banana trees, agaves, fig trees, cactus, bamboos,…

You will notify on the top of the village stairs leading to a troglodytic fort built during the 12th Century, 40 meters height. As it was constructed in the steep cliff, invaders couldn’t climb it ; it was a highly-developed defensive system.

We visited it for you !

After Sarlat, La Roque Gageac is the first village to visit near La Barde. It’s very small but contains lot of hidden wealths, that we advise you to discover with the “Gabarres” (shifts with flat bottom people used to carry salt and wine from Bordeaux) or with guided tour organized every Wednesday evening of Summer, from 9pm (free visits). After the visit of the village, you can pursue your walk with one of the 3 hiking paths around La Roque Gageac (1.5 to 3.5km).

3 points of interest to discover : The “Notre Dame de La Roque Gageac” church, built in 1330, the “Manoir de Tarde”, Renaissance vestige that the owner was the famous humanist and botanist Jean Tarde, and the “La Malartrie” Château.
