Brantome, little Venice of Perigord

In Green Perigord, Brantome captivates us when we arrive, with its abbey beauty and power. Built by Benedictine monks during the 7th and 8th centuries, this edifice has a section constructed in the cliff.

You will visit it in an independent way thanks to plan and numerous commentated signs, very instructive. You will notice the presence of ten caves converted in the cliff, where monks had arranged their crammer, washing place, mill and dovecote. On the path, you will admire the Last Judgment cave, witness of the spirituality that filled with life the community during more than thousand years.

To end on a high note, don’t hesitate to visit the abbey church tower, certainly the oldest bell tower of France, that has the particularity having been built not on the church but on the rocky piton of 12 meters height.

Little island of 300 meters diameter shaped with the Dronne, Brantome received the name of “Venice of Perigord”. It’s time to visit the town in a unique way ; by shift.
